Garden Pond Pictures & Garden Pond Directions #4 - The next step is to dig the hole for your garden pond

You might be tempted to just grab a shovel and start digging, however, there is a much easier way to help you determine the size & shape of your pond. Simply take a length of rope, string, chain, old hose, (or whatever else you may have laying around the house), lay it on the ground in your desired shape, then dig out the soil inside of this border. Although the shape is up to you, something with curved lines (such as a kidney shape) seems most natural and easy on the eyes.

Don’t just dig a hole into the ground - get done twice as fast from ½ of the effort! When I put my first pond in my garden, I dug the hole and carted the soil off in a wheelbarrow to use in a different part of the garden. It wasn’t until my second pond, that I got the brilliant idea (from my wonderful husband) to lay the soil up along the outer wall of the hole as we were digging. This method allows your pond edge to grow higher as you dig deeper. You simply pile the soil up as you dig, then rake it off into a nice even ledge after you’re finished digging.

Lay a long board with a level on top of it across the edges of your pond to make sure that the edges of your pond are level. If it’s off a bit, simply move the soil around until you get a nice even edge. If you don’t level the pond now, when you fill it up with water, it will fill up unevenly & you’ll have a larger gap with the liner showing at one end - and we don’t want that!

Very Important: Remember to remove any sharp objects like stones or roots from the inside of the pond!

Garden Pond Pictures & Garden Pond Directions #3 - The Right Spot For Your Garden Pond

The placement of your new pond is very important. Here are a few things you will need to ask yourself before you start digging.

  1. - Will you be able to have a good view of the pond from inside of your home? You will get twice as much enjoyment from your pond if you can see it when you’re inside. Some of my favorite views of the pond are from my kitchen window! I love to watch on warm rainy days when the birds come & bathe in the little puddles that form on the warm stones, and the cold winter days when ice gathers around the edges of the waterfall!
  2. Is the location close to other animals? You want to make sure that larger animals have limited access to your pond area. For example: some dogs will be tempted to jump in and take a swim & you don’t want their nails to puncture your lining.
  3. Will there be some shade sometime during the day? Shade for at least part of the day is a good idea, because limiting direct sun helps to prevent algae growth.
  4. Is the location I’ve picked under deciduous trees (trees that drop their leaves every year)? If you place your pond under deciduous trees, you will have seed drop every spring and leaf drop every fall. You will also have a few fallen leaves after every hard wind. If you don’t mind cleaning the leaves out every once in a while, you don’t need to worry about this aspect. I think it is worth the extra cleaning I need to do to have my pond tucked under some beautiful shade trees.

Garden Pond Pictures & Garden Pond Directions #2

We had to decide how much bigger we wanted to make our small pond. Then, we laid a rope around the outside edge of our new design. Here's my sweetie digging up the old plants, so we can use them around the new pond.

The Way You Like it!

When it comes to design, I think there are as many different opinions about how a pond should look as there are people who build them! Why? Because each person is trying to portray what s/he sees as the perfect space. You need to decide what works for you! Just because I love a thick jungle of cottage flowers as a backdrop for a pond, does not mean that you can’t put your pond out in an open stretch of lawn all by itself! Spend some time looking through different pictures of garden ponds (library, book store, or favorite magazine rack), and jot down some notes about what seems to catch your eye. Once you know what style you want to go with, you’re ready to plan the process.

Garden Pond Pictures & Garden Pond Directions

As I walk down the cobblestone path brushing past the feathery ferns and the dense carpet of ivy, I remember that it wasn’t long ago, that these little garden blessings only played out in my dreams.
As a hummingbird makes another pass through the water fountain to catch a cool drink, I watch the droplets tumble slowly down around the waters edge as he then splashes around on one of the warm stones to take his morning bath. And even though there is a cloud of a dewy haze around the woodland garden this morning, I can already see the brightly colored fish jotting back & forth playfully through the small tangle of pond plants.

Here's how it all began...

How to build your own garden pond...

Maintaining Your Home to Retain Value

You've got the kitchen of your dreams and a master bedroom suite that would look right at home in a 5-star hotel. And your gorgeous new exterior paint job is the envy of the neighborhood. Your place looks so great that real estate agents are dropping off their cards telling you how much they could sell your place for, if you felt like putting it on the market.

Sell it now! Good grief no! Not after all the remodeling work. But... who knows? In five or six years when the kids are off to college and you and your mate get tired of mowing that big lawn and knocking around in a house built for five but inhabited by two, a downtown condo may look pretty inviting. Face it. At some point in the future, whether it's next year or in 20 years, you're going to want to sell your house. And with all the improvements you've made over the years, you should get a nice return on the sale, assuming you don't let your house fall apart.

Remodeling can be frustrating but it's also fun -- filled with anticipation and visible rewards at the end of the project. Maintenance is dull and routine, but you have to do it if you want to retain the value you've added to your home. For example: Hardwood floors need to be refinished every 5-10 years depending on wear and tear. If they get too worn down you can do permanent damage to the wood. Exteriors need to be repainted every 5-10 years too, depending on such factors as the weather where you live, or you can damage the exterior wood. Your roof and gutters need annual inspections. A clogged or damaged gutter and drain spout can flood your basement and cause serious damage.

And the list goes on. Like taxes and dental checkups, regular home maintenance isn't fun. But you must do it if you want to take care of what is likely your biggest single asset -- your home.

Annual checklist home maintenance checklist:

  • Kitchen: Check for leaks under and around the sink. Plumbing leaks can damage cabinetry and floors. Check and repair grout and caulking on tile countertops and around the sink. Also check wear and tear on wood floors, which periodically need to be refinished.
  • Bathrooms: Check for plumbing leaks and check grout on tiles. If the grout gets worn away water will start getting into the walls behind the bathroom, causing damage.
  • Basement: Check for cracks in the foundation and leaks. Buildings settle over time and even after decades of having a dry basement leaks may suddenly occur.
  • Attic: Check for signs of water leakage from the roof. Also look for any sign of termites or rodents. Squirrels or rats that nest in your attic can chew electrical wiring, which can lead to fires.
  • Smoke alarms: Batteries need to be changed annually.
  • Heating system: If yours has a filter, change it annually.
  • Air conditioning system: Change all filters monthly or as recommended by the filter manufacturer.
  • Roof: Note if any shingles have fallen off or if gutters or downspouts appear clogged or damaged. You can always hire a reliable roofing company to get on the roof and take a look. Reputable roofing companies won't try to sell you a new one unless you really need it. You can simply pay them for an inspection.
  • House exterior: If your house is wood, check that the paint hasn't worn away so much that the primer paint is showing. If the primer also wears down, you can do damage to the wood. Brick houses should be inspected for damaged bricks or masonry. Check stucco houses and repair any cracks large enough to slide a nickel into.
  • Asphalt and concrete driveways: Repair any cracks or buckling.
